I Locked My Phone in a Box and Now I Have to Talk to My Family: Surviving #Janalogue

January 9, 2026
FacebookX TwitterPinterestLinkedInTumblrRedditVKWhatsAppEmail

January 2026 has arrived, and once again the internet has decided that self-denial is the highest form of enlightenment #Janalogue.

First, carbs were declared evil.
Then alcohol was exiled under Dry January.
Now comes Analogue January, also known as #Janalogue.

The promise is noble: regain control of dopamine, reconnect with reality, and live intentionally.
The reality is less poetic. I have been staring at a wall for forty-five minutes and still do not know the weather.

Below is a practical translation of the core rules of #Janalogue, explained for anyone whose emotional range has been muted since 2019.

Rule One: The Bedroom Ban

Or How I Accidentally Met My Thoughts Again

Phones are banned from the bedroom.
Instead, you are encouraged to buy a physical alarm clock.

No one warned me how aggressive these clocks are.
They do not vibrate politely.
They scream like a mechanical rooster fueled by vengeance.

Without a phone, there is no doomscrolling into unconsciousness.
You simply lie there. Awake.
With thoughts.

At eleven p.m., my thoughts consist entirely of unlocked doors and embarrassing memories from middle school.
This morning, muscle memory made me reach for my phone to check emails. I grabbed a glass of water instead and poured it directly onto my face.

Nature has notifications now.

Rule Two: Physical Media

When Listening to Music Becomes a Technical Skill

Streaming is out.
Vinyl, CDs, and DVDs are back.

This sounds charming until you remember that CDs skip if you make eye contact with them.
I attempted to skip a track and triggered a mechanical noise that sounded like a blender processing regret.

Portable CD players do not fit in pockets.
They occupy space with authority.
I am currently walking around holding DVDs like a librarian from 2004, hoping nostalgia will count as enrichment.

Convenience, it turns out, was not ruining music.
It was saving time.

Rule Three: The Dumb Phone Weekend

T9 Texting Is Not a Skill, It Is a Punishment

Weekends require swapping your smartphone for a basic phone.

I tried to text On my way.
It took four minutes.
By the time the message sent, I had already arrived.

Navigation is worse.
Without maps, I ended up three towns away searching for brunch.
I had to ask a stranger for directions using my voice.
Face to face.
Like a historical reenactment.

Human interaction hits differently when you cannot escape it with a swipe.

The Verdict: Is #Janalogue Worth It?

#Janalogue is effective if your goal is awareness.
Specifically, awareness of how much friction modern life quietly removed.

It slows you down.
It reconnects you with boredom.
It also reveals how much we rely on small conveniences to function smoothly.

I am one dumb-phone weekend away from considering smoke signals.
Until then, I will be over here rewinding a cassette tape with a pencil and pretending this is growth.
